Blog: Hydration

What is Hydration?

It’s mid-Summer and we’ve had some extraordinarily hot days so hydration is a big factor.
But what is hydration, exactly? It’s about a lot more than just drinking enough water. There are 4 key electrolytes; sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, which facilitate nerve and muscle function and balance pH levels. They are also essential for regulating water distribution and ensuring our cells receive proper hydration.  Sodium and potassium are particularly important as they control fluid movement across cell membranes, vital for transporting nutrients into our cells and carrying wastes out.

A mineral-rich diet helps maintain your hydration: use a good quality salt (preferable not sourced from the sea given the high levels of nano-plastics researchers have found in sea salt) that’s rich in minerals (not denatured table salt), bananas, apricots, raisins and dates are high in potassium. Spinach, legumes such as lentils and beans and (yay!) dark chocolate are all good sources of magnesium and choose dairy, almonds, oranges and legumes for good sources of calcium. There are many more!

Your Brain Gets Thirsty!

Hydration affects brain function and cognition (even being a little bit dehydrated can result in confusion and disorientation) as well as temperature regulation, alertness and motor function. Tiny changes in hydration can have a significant impact on your everyday performance and work, as well as athletics and sport. So remember to drink water at your desk and boost your children’s water intake on days they’re participating in games and sports in the hot sun.

How to know if you’re dehydrated

Symptoms of dehydration can include dark urine, muscle spasms/cramping , weakness, dizziness, confusion, extreme fatigue, nausea and a dry ‘cottony’ mouth.

In some wellness circles, there’s a belief that by the time you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.  This simply isn’t true. So how do you know when you’re getting dehydrated?

There’s a well-established bio-technology humans have been using for millennia to know when to replace fluids; it’s called thirst.  We’ve survived on this planet for a very long time and it turns out our bodies are very smart when it comes to thirst and hydration. Why would our biology get it so wrong as to send faulty messages about something so important? Research has shown that in fact, we get thirsty ahead of time… that’s the whole point of feeling thirst. Trust it.

Pegasus Fluid Imbalance Remedy

Pegasus Fluid Imbalance 6C  is a homeopathic remedy that illustrates perfectly how Homeopathy brings the body into HOMEOSTASIS (balance). This remedy helps to re-distribute and balance fluids throughout the body.

If you’re struggling with water retention (oedema) or having swollen feet during flights, this remedy has a diuretic effect, helping the body to let go of excess fluids. Alternatively, the remedy helps the body to hold onto water, for example if you’re suffering from dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhoea, profuse sweating or heat stroke.

If you are experiencing migraines as a result of dehydration, Pegasus Fluid Imbalance 6C should be taken together with Pegasus Migraine 30C. It will help to redistribute the excess fluid behind the eyes, releasing the pressure which maybe contributing to the migraine, and hydrate the patient.

Pegasus Fluid Imbalance 6C also assists in the Acid/Alkali balance in the body, allowing for optimal metabolic body function.

It’s also useful for endurance athletes in prevention and treatment of dehydration (add injury 6c for muscle soreness and stiffness).

Whether there is too much or too little water in the body, Pegasus Fluid Imbalance 6C will assist in bringing body fluids back to homeostasis, distributing the fluid to where it is meant to be.
