Blog: Understanding Candida: Restoring Gut Health

We all live with candida/ fungi, in balance with our friendly bacteria, in the gut until ‘activated’ by an extreme shock, ongoing stress or over-exposure to anti-biotics.  Consuming a diet high in overt and hidden sugars (cakes, biscuits, pastries, refined carbs as in white breads & pasta, Fizzy soda drinks, etc.) on a regular basis can also trigger a candida overgrowth.

Clinical reality shows that when this naturally occurring fungus overgrows, it becomes a persistent parasite that can compromise the health of your entire family—from hyperactive children to aging parents struggling with chronic fatigue or joint pain.

Signs of Overgrowth

Candida thrives when the delicate balance of gut flora is disrupted. The candida will ‘overgrow’ and smother the friendly bacteria and increase acidity in the gut. This in turn may cause a ‘leaky gut’, where the gut lining becomes permeable and toxins that should be expelled, leak into the systemic system (blood). Once the candida infiltrates other organs, metabolic acidity will increase resulting in many health problems;

Systemic Symptoms: Brain fog, mid-afternoon lethargy, and intense sugar cravings.

Immune & Skin Issues: Recurrent thrush, athlete’s foot, nail fungus and unexplained histamine spikes (allergies, hayfever, or skin rashes).

Mood & Focus: In children, this often manifests as an inability to focus or behavioural struggles; in adults, it frequently presents as irritability and depressive states.

Histamine levels will rise causing allergies, hayfever, skin disorders and sinus issues. (with increased mucous secretions)

Digestive Distress: food will not digest properly resulting in bloating, flatulence, acid reflux (heartburn), loose and/or constipation (IBS – irritable bowel symptoms)

Invariably Hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose) goes hand in hand with candidiasis, causing fatigue & ‘sugar’ cravings, leading to further spikes in blood glucose, leading to depression type symptoms. (ADHD children cannot focus and are unmanageable, while adults become irritable and depressive)

Mid-morning & afternoon lethargy: (brain fog), particularly noticeable after eating. The craving for ‘sugars’ when blood glucose is low, causes a surge of insulin, which causes a ‘lower than low’ blood glucose which if occurs ongoingly, can burn out the pancreas (Insulin resistance) and even lead to diabetes!

The compromised immune system allows Entero Viruses (Coxsackie, Mononucleosis, Epstein Barr and others) to activate (they lie dormant in our bodies normally) and lead to ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis aka ’Yuppie Flu’) which leads to extreme fatigue and ultimately Fybromyalgia (muscle weakness & pain).

The Path to Recovery: Pegasus Protocols

Regaining balance requires a dual approach: strict food management and targeted support to eliminate the overgrowth and stabilize the system. To facilitate this, we recommend the following Pegasus Speciality Remedies, available exclusively online:

The Essential Protocol

    • Pegasus A’Fungal (Homeopathic) Drops: The core treatment. Start with 10 drops on a clean tongue three times daily for one week, then twice daily for one week, followed by once daily until complete. Available exclusively online here.
    • Pegasus A’Fungal Herbal Tincture: Use 20 drops in 10ml of water after meals, following the same tapering schedule as the drops. Available exclusively online here.
    • We also recommend taking the following over-the-counter supplements available at all good health shops and pharmacies
      • Chromium (200mcg): Vital for aiding the pancreas in insulin and blood sugar control. Take one capsule mid-morning and one mid-afternoon.
  • Spirulina Tabs/Caps: Use to stabilize blood glucose and diminish stubborn sugar cravings. Take two tabs mid-morning and two mid-afternoon.

Lifestyle Support

  • Eliminate: High-glycemic foods, refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and yeast.
  • Incorporate: Probiotic-rich foods—such as fermented sauerkraut, kefir, and live-culture yogurt—to restore favorable gut bacteria.

⚠️ A Note on the “Herxheimer Reaction”: About 4–5 days into treatment, you may experience nausea, headaches, or increased fatigue. This is a Herxheimer reaction—it is not a sign of failure, but rather an indicator that the Candida is dying and your body is detoxifying. Stay the course; it is proof that you are successfully restoring balance.
